The life story of Buddha is told in this Sri Lankan film. The film captures the final days in the life of Buddha, with flashbacks to his childhood and youth. It is one of the most expensive Sinhalese language films ever made, with a budget of US$1 million. Buddha was born in 623 BC in Lumbini, Nepal to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya Devi. He was raised with all luxuries until he turned 29 years old. He would often get into disputes with his father that made him to leave the palace. In his youth, he renounced family life and search for enlightenment. He was called Gautama after he reached enlightenment, becoming a Buddha which means "Enlightened One". Buddha was a king of a tribe called the Sakyas. He took a vow to go to solitude in the Himalayas at the age of 29 after losing a debate to his cousin. After living in isolation for 18 years he taught the Dhamma (his teachings). In his thirtieth year, he was visited by three old priests who were jealous of him because he had become famous without becoming wealthy or powerful yet. Buddha replied that they were right to criticize him for not creating wealth or power, but that they were wrong in expecting these things. He then identified the true cause of dissatisfaction as "thirst" (i.e. craving) desire. He said that when one is free of this desire, one was truly contented. After this encounter with the three priests Buddha returned to his home town where he had his first public sermon and established the community of Buddhist monks (Sangha). The movie ends with Buddha's death at the age of 80 in Kushinagar after his journey of redemption by meditation(japam). The film premiered on 18 October 2007 at Colombo's Shrine hall and was released nationwide on 19 October 2007. Veerasiri Chitrasiri, a Buddhist scholar and Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Peradeniya, was the historical consultant on the film.
